Building a Christ-Centred Marriage in a Modern World
Building a Christ-Centred Marriage in a Modern World Practical ways couples can keep Christ at the centre while navigating work, technology, finances, parenting, and social pressures.

““A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.””
Ecclesiastes 4:12
Marriage has always required commitment, patience and grace. But modern couples face pressures that previous generations could scarcely have imagined. Phones follow us to the dinner table, work enters the home through our laptops, social media invites comparison, and busy schedules can leave husband and wife living beside each other rather than truly sharing life.
For Christian couples, the answer is not simply to work harder at marriage. It is to remember who stands at its centre.
A Christ-centred marriage begins with the understanding that marriage is more than a partnership between two people. Husband and wife are invited to build their life together around Christ.
Jesus teaches us that a house built on rock can withstand storms (Matthew 7:24–25). Marriage needs the same foundation.
This begins in ordinary moments. Pray for your spouse, even if you do not yet feel comfortable praying aloud together. Attend church together. Read Scripture. Talk about faith. Ask one another not only, “How was your day?” but occasionally, “How can I pray for you?”
Christ should also shape the way couples treat each other.
When disagreements arise, marriage gives us an opportunity to practise patience rather than pride, forgiveness rather than resentment, and service rather than selfishness. “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other” (Ephesians 4:32) is profoundly practical advice for married life.
A Christ-centred marriage does not mean a conflict-free marriage. Christian couples will disagree. They will occasionally hurt one another. They will make mistakes.
The difference is what they do next.
Instead of asking, “Who won the argument?” they can ask, “How do we restore our relationship?”
There is also a powerful lesson in Ecclesiastes 4:12: “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Applied to Christian marriage, it gives us a beautiful picture: husband, wife and God woven together.
The world will offer couples countless definitions of a successful marriage. Bigger homes. Better holidays. Perfect photographs. Successful children.
Christian marriage offers something quieter and deeper.
Two imperfect people learning, year after year, to love one another with the love they themselves have received from Christ.
That kind of marriage is not built in a single wedding ceremony.
It is built every day.
